Alexa Schoonmaker
Critical Care Director
HCA Grand Strand Medical Center
29
My career began at GSMC, and I am so thankful for the opportunity to grow here within HCA. I have been here seven years and during that time have grown as a bedside nurse, Clinical Nurse Coordinator, Manager, critical care director, and most recently have grown as a director over a larger service line. I have had the opportunity to work on many unit projects, quality improvement projects, collaborated with many disciplines, and have truly worked to provide my teams with excellent support to provide excellent care to the community we serve. Being able to serve the community in which I live makes me feel empowered as I wants what best for the people I encounter everyday. I continue to want more in my career and growth to me means I have made an impact. I do have a goal of becoming a chief nursing officer in my career and am extremely thankful to my husband, family, and leadership here at Grand Strand for all their support.
Advice to 18-Year-Old Self: Be ready to take an opportunity and be vulnerable to what is possible in the world. It is okay to be nervous and okay to ask questions.
