CCU Secures $2.4M to Expand Hands-On Nursing and Health Sciences Training

Coastal Carolina University has secured $2.4 million to support the creation of an Advanced Nursing and Health Sciences Simulation Laboratory, significantly expanding hands-on training opportunities that prepare graduates to meet the region’s evolving healthcare and workforce needs.

The federal funding, supported by U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., will be used to purchase state-of-the-art simulation equipment to enhance the nursing and health sciences programs in the Conway Medical Center College of Health and Human Performance (CMCCHHP).

The new Advanced Nursing and Health Sciences Simulation Laboratory will provide realistic, high-quality clinical experiences in a risk-free environment to strengthen students’ clinical skills and patient-care readiness while preparing them to serve vulnerable and underserved populations across South Carolina.

“We are very thankful for the support of the Honorable Lindsey Graham,” said Colleen McGlone, Ph.D., dean of the CMCCHHP. “This funding will help CCU create a nursing simulation lab that embodies our commitment to reach students where they are and elevate their learning through meaningful, hands-on practice.”

Funding will also support the purchase of advanced training equipment, including high-fidelity mannequins, augmented and virtual reality simulation systems and software, and specialty simulation areas for pediatric care and labor and delivery. Additional resources will equip hospital ward setups and student nursing kits with essential nursing tools. These resources ensure our graduates leave CCU fully prepared to meet workforce demands.

"The funding directly supports our ability to bridge gaps in care and respond to the growing nursing shortage across our region,” McGlone said.

The lab will not only enhance CCU's educational environments for students but also strengthen the health and well-being of our community and region.
