Governor Proclaims Lights On Afterschool Day in South Carolina

Gov. Henry McMaster has proclaimed Oct. 22, 2026, as Lights On Afterschool Day in South Carolina, recognizing the vital role afterschool programs play in supporting students, working families and communities across the state.

The proclamation coincided with the national Lights On Afterschool celebration, which raises awareness of the importance of quality afterschool programs and the need to expand access. The governor recognized these programs for supporting academic achievement, providing hands-on learning and helping young people develop essential workforce and life skills.

The proclamation also highlighted the demand for afterschool opportunities, noting that for every child enrolled in a program, four more are waiting to get in.

"Afterschool programs are essential to the success of South Carolina's children, families and future workforce," said Zelda Waymer, president and CEO of the South Carolina Afterschool Alliance (SCAA). "These programs do more than provide a safe place after school. They create opportunities for students to discover their potential and develop skills that prepare them for the future."

That impact was on display earlier in October when SCAA hosted its annual STEM Extravaganza at Segra Park in Columbia. The event brought together students from 14 South Carolina counties for hands-on STEM learning, innovation and career exploration. Featuring 56 interactive STEM exhibits and more than 150 volunteers and exhibit support personnel, the event connected students with educators, industry professionals and community organizations.

Post-event surveys showed that more than 98 percent of both student and adult respondents would return next year. "STEM Extravaganza is a powerful example of what happens when communities come together to invest in young people," Waymer said. "But opportunities like these shouldn't be limited to one event or one community."

Organized nationally by the Afterschool Alliance, Lights On Afterschool celebrates programs that keep young people safe, engaged and inspired beyond the school day. SCAA continues working with educators, businesses, community partners, and policymakers to strengthen and expand access to quality afterschool and summer learning opportunities statewide.
