The Myrtle Beach area is welcoming a growing wave of eco-conscious visitors, including international youth leaders who visited the Grand Strand this summer and participated in a high-impact beautification project.
On Aug. 7, more than a dozen attendees participating in the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE)’s Young Civic Leadership Summit joined the Keep Myrtle Beach Beautiful (KMBB) organization for a half-day cleanup of City of Myrtle Beach parks, beach access points and high-traffic public areas. As a result, several hundred pounds of litter was removed, underscoring the growing intersection of eco-tourism, civic engagement, and destination stewardship in the Myrtle Beach area.
“We are so appreciative to these international leadership fellows who visited our community and committed their time to a project that makes a visible difference,” said Jimmy Gray, president of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, which oversees KMBB. “This kind of partnership reflects a growing movement in the tourism and events industry where travelers want to leave a place better than they found it.”
The group, made up of youth leaders from countries around the world, began their efforts at the Sheraton Myrtle Beach, then walked to key locations such as Anderson Park and Chapin Park, collecting litter along the way. Participants also took part in a sustainability education session tailored to highlight the environmental challenges and opportunities faced by coastal communities like Myrtle Beach.
The event was part of a broader, four-day annual leadership summit focused on civic engagement, global cooperation and social responsibility. Summit attendees also participated in various other service projects across the Grand Strand.
The initiative underscores the chamber’s greater mission to protect the Myrtle Beach area as a desirable beach destination to live, work and play, all while prioritizing environmental responsibility and sustainability.
