Sea Haven: A Lifeline for At-Risk Youth

Every story we hear reinforces our commitment to creating a safer, more supportive environment for young people

Founded in 1980, Sea Haven stands as Horry County's only emergency youth shelter, providing a crucial sanctuary for teenagers in crisis. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, its commitment to the well-being of youth in the area is evident through its wide array of services tailored to meet the complex needs of transient and vulnerable populations.

At the heart of Sea Haven's mission is the desire to support youth ages 10 to 24 who are facing immediate crises. Whether it’s a case of running away, experiencing domestic abuse, or other life-altering challenges, Sea Haven serves as a safe haven for these individuals. The organization's executive director, Curtis Joe, shared, "We have created a continuum of services to embark on transition-age youth, ages 18 to 24, a population often overlooked in our society."

Joe's personal journey adds depth to the organization's mission. Having experienced the tumultuous realities of foster care and adoption himself, he is passionate about providing the support he wishes he'd had during his formative years. His story is filled with hardship, and resilience – ultimately providing a guiding light for both staff and the youth they serve.

Over the past six years, Sea Haven has expanded its offerings significantly. Primarily focused on crisis intervention, the organization also provides transitional services aimed at helping older youth navigate the complexities of adulthood. From providing basic shelter and necessities to offering life skills training, Sea Haven’s multifaceted approach empowers youth to overcome their circumstances.

Notably, the organization adheres to the principles outlined in the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act of 1974. This federal initiative underlines the importance of offering unrestricted access to sanctuary for youth in distress — an ethos that Sea Haven embodies.

With hundreds of youth served annually, the organization not only addresses immediate needs but also invests in long-term solutions. By fostering trusting relationships and offering individual case planning, Sea Haven is not just a stopgap but a pathway toward healing and stability.

Curtis Joe notes that the most impactful aspect of the work is seeing youth transform from despair to hope. “Every story we hear reinforces our commitment to creating a safer, more supportive environment for young people,” he explained.

Sea Haven actively encourages community involvement, recognizing that collaboration is a vital part of its mission. By partnering with local organizations, schools, and businesses, it aims to raise awareness and create a network of support for at-risk youth.

As Sea Haven continues to grow and adapt, its commitment to serving the youth of Horry County remains unwavering. Joe’s vision for the future includes expanding services further and improving outreach efforts, ensuring that no young person feels alone in their time of need.
