Noreta Family Medicine

MD, FAAFP and Owner

Columbia

Dr. Melissa Boylan opened her direct primary care office, Noreta Family Medicine, in July 2020. Her goal is to provide high-quality primary care for patients using a business model that solves many of the problems of the US health care system. She graduated from the University of Notre Dame, Georgetown University School of Medicine, and Palmetto Health Family Medicine Residency program, where she was co-chief resident. She has practiced in Columbia for 15 years.

What would you say is your greatest professional accomplishment to date?

Seeing my patients develop trust in my care always gives me a sense of accomplishment. However, sharing why I started my own direct primary care practice in South Carolina, where less than 20 percent of practices are not owned by a large health care system, on the TEDxCongaree Vista stage was a very proud moment for me. I have been able to bring my dream of what a family doctor can be to life!

What one thing have you learned that has served you well over the years?

The increased time I get to spend with patients, the sense of freedom I have in creating mutually agreed upon treatment plans with patients, and the leadership skills I utilize to run my business have protected me from the burnout experienced by close to 50 percent of practicing family physicians. It’s not always easy and I put in a lot of hours, but my career has become fulfilling again.
