Longtime Grand Strand golf and tourism executive Steve Mays is the new tournament director of the Myrtle Beach Classic, bringing more than 30 years of industry experience to the region’s annual PGA Tour event.

SPORTFIVE, which operates the tournament, announced the appointment Oct. 15. Mays will oversee tournament planning, operations, and continued growth, effective immediately.

Most recently, Mays served as president of Founders Group International, overseeing 21 Myrtle Beach-area golf courses. He also spent 13 years with Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday, where he directed the World Amateur Championship and managed other major golf events.

An avid golfer, Mays developed a lasting connection to the Grand Strand while earning his bachelor’s degree at Coastal Carolina University.

“I’ve spent my career helping grow golf in Myrtle Beach, and it’s an honor to take on this role,” Mays said.

For the Grand Strand, the Myrtle Beach Classic offers a stage to showcase the region’s golf courses, hospitality and community. Its continued development brings together tourism partners, local businesses, sponsors and volunteers around an event with national visibility.

Mike Harmon, executive vice president of golf events at SPORTFIVE, cited Mays’ regional relationships and experience leading golf organizations as strengths he brings to the position.

The Myrtle Beach Classic returns to The Dunes Golf and Beach Club May 13-16, 2027, for its fourth year. Previous champions include Chris Gotterup, Ryan Fox, and Brandt Snedeker.
